2010s Anthems

4 songs · 3s snippets · 3s snippets — Hard

Three-second snippets of four 2010s mega-hits. The era was engineered for short attention spans, so this is more playable than three seconds usually has any right to be — just bring your reflexes.

By the 2010s, the streaming era had reshaped what a hit record needed to do. Songs got shorter, hooks moved earlier, and producers obsessed over the first few seconds. This four-song quiz gives you the period's most-streamed shape.

Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" (2017) was the streaming-era benchmark for a while — multiple billions of plays, more than half a year at the top of the UK chart, and a marimba hook anyone can imitate within two listens. Sheeran's pivot from acoustic balladeer to dancehall-adjacent pop landed largely on the strength of this single.

"Uptown Funk" (2014), credited to Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, is the throwback engineered for a contemporary chart. It's structured like a 1980s Minneapolis funk record — Cameo, the Time, the Gap Band — but with modern compression and a chorus designed for dance floors of every age bracket. It spent fourteen weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Adele's "Hello" (2015) is the lead single from 25 and broke the record for fastest single to a million digital downloads in the US — over a million in its first week. Greg Kurstin produced; Adele wrote it about a phone call that doesn't happen. The piano-and-voice intro became one of the most recognized openings in mainstream pop, and the song dragged Adele's entire album into the era's biggest sales numbers.

Pharrell Williams's "Happy" (2013) was the surprise success — written for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, then released as a standalone single, and unexpectedly the biggest song of 2014. Built on a single-chord verse and a chorus that uses essentially three notes, it's one of those records that proves how far minimalism can stretch in pop when the mood is right.

Easy mode gives you ten-second clips, which is enough to catch the marimba on "Shape of You" or that Pharrell falsetto. Hard mode trims to three seconds — still doable on these particular hooks, but you can't be daydreaming.
